Please, Understand Me!

Entering the Fray: Back to Call for Change

The swearing-in of the new Kenyan President marks my official re-entry into the socio-political conversation in my country, Kenya.

It’s deeply upsetting for me, and let me tell you why. Corruption! I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of this vice on the lives of my fellow Kenyans whom I deeply care for. I had hoped that under a Raila presidency, corruption would decline in our beloved country. I was optimistic about the potential of an active anti-corruption regime for my generation. But that ended up not being the case. Ruto, to my surprise and disgust, won the 2022 General elections. This means for the next five years we are going to experience serial corruption.

I often state that a “poor” corruption-free country is better than a “rich” corruption-ridden one. I ask you, my dear reader, to consider Abuja with its oil riches and Kigali with its green splendor. Where would you want your children to grow up? For me, the answer is clear.

Despite the grand promises made by Dr. William Ruto, I find it hard to be optimistic about a better Kenya. My skepticism stems from the belief that his government may not wage a comprehensive war against all forms of corruption. The unchecked presence of corrupt elements in his government deeply concerns me. It goes beyond just financial wrongdoing—it leads to crime, division, suffering, and even more corruption.

I’ve noticed the emphasis on religion in Dr. Ruto’s regime. As a staunch Christian, I believe this provides an opportunity for me to critique the government using a language they claim to understand.

I firmly believe that our motherland needs resolute individuals to step up and bring about real change—sustainable change. As I embark on this journey, I call upon you, my dear reader, to stand with me in solidarity.

a “poor” corruption-free country is better than a “rich” corruption-ridden one.

May God bless you, and may God bless Kenya.
